I had MVD almost two weeks ago. I have been regaining my strength the past few days. Tonight my husband and I were watching a comedian on TV. He was hilarious and we were both laughing so hard...then the side of my face started aching so badly and the pain/stab in my ear. Did this surgery not work? I haven't had to take the tegretol but I started crying because I'm afraid this hasn't been fixed. My laughter and smile is ME. That is such a big part of who I am (was) before this awful condition struck me 6 months ago. Now I can't even smile and laugh anymore and I had this hellish operation and still can't. I let them drill a hole in my skull for God's sake trusting they were going to fix this. Am I expecting too much too soon? Does anyone really know? If the Cleveland Clinic specialist in this area thought he saw a compression in my MRI and did the operation and I still feel these pains/sensations, does anyone know? I don't know. I just don't know if there is hope anymore. I have to look seriously into the fact that I may not be able to live my life the way I always have. I may not be able to keep going in my teaching career. I may have to alter my life according to this. I thought the MVD would give me my life back.

Hi Jamie,

I've been told it takes at leat a month for the healing after the MVD surgery. I'm so sorry to hear about this. I pray that this pain will go away, and you can have your life back the way it was before. I haven't had MVD surgery yet, my doctor is pushing for it since the gamma knife didn't work. God speed to you in your healing.

Thanks Liz. I had just heard of people who has the MVD and woke up cured with no pain. I was hoping for the same. But...we can just do the best we can with what we are dealt with I guess. I'm just wondering if I will be able to continue with my teaching career...I don't know if I will have the strength.

Jamie,
I'm sorry you are still having pain. I hope it gets better by the day. But at least you pain isn't as severe. Look at it by the week and see if you think this week is better than the last week. That is what I did. And they were. And that continued for 8 or 9 months except for Oct/Nov which historically is my worst time.

Hi Liz,
I'm feeling a little better. I'm trying to accept that it's going to take awhile for it all to heal. I am trying to be positive and believe that the surgery did work and all is going to be well. I still have pain in my ear and jaw but it isn't very severe. How are you?

Hi Jamie,
I'm very sorry to hear that your still in pain. I am no expert on this as I was just diagnosed a week ago but I am a nursing student and I have done a lot of research on TN. I feel safe in saying that I would think it's fairly normal for you to possibly still experience pain after MVD. The artery/ vessel resting on your nerve was there for some time and wore it down a bit. I wouldn't expect it to be better right away. Give the nerve a little time to heal and see if your Dr can keep you on meds in the meantime. Try to keep an optimistic outlook (I know how hard that is)

Jamie,
I am so sorry you are still having pain. We all know how bad it can be. I also had pain after my MVD but the pain gradually got better. Even though I still take a lot of medicine, the surgery did give me a life. Maybe you need to continue to take medicine and maybe the medicine will control the pain now. Talk to your doctor. I take as much medicine as I did before surgery but at least it controls the pain on most days. I have had periods where the pain increased and although bad when I really think about it, it doesn't compare to pre-surgery. So you may be just experiencing one of those times. The surgeon told me that what he did to me caused a lot of inflammation. But of course I wanted total pain relief and no medicine and for a long time I was disappointed. But I am better. We have had members to repeat the surgery with great success. My surgeon wanted to operate again after 2 months but he also said that I would probably continue to get pain relief for up to 6 months. My pain got better for about 8 or 9 months. But I still wonder if I made the right decision about not having surgery. I still think about doing it again. My marker will be the fall when I have the most trouble. If I have a bad fall season like I had before the surgery without a doubt I'll be in for surgery after Christmas. Talk to your doctor about restarting the tegretol or another medicine. Don't give up hope. There are other treatments and medications in addition to surgery. I do hope you get better. Please let us know tomorrow if you are doing better.
Liz
