wm, my symptoms are atypical and focused in my teeth, and my MRI was clean. My own personal theory (not based on science) is that atypical symptoms could potentially stem from the nerve fibers inside the nerve itself rather than from an insult to…

I have atypical TN and with recent feedback from Red L. I pushed for another imaging study. It's been four years. To my utter surprise I just found out about the the 3T superiority. All this despite top neurosurgeons looking at my images in the…

Hi Liz! I'm brand new to the site, as of today! And I'm getting ready for my MVD on May 26th. Did you have the surgery, as well? If so, please give me any advice you think might be helpful! Thanks! Tammie

It seems like you shouldn't have to wait that long for surgery. Don't you live in a large area? I had mine within 2 weeks after seeing the surgeon. And he assures me in most cases I won't have to wait a week if I get in severe pain…

What treatments have you undergone (or will undergo)? With what success?
MVD surgery in Apr 2009; currently taking neurontin, trileptal and tylenol 3
Please share your TN story with us...(How did your pain first emerge and then change over time? Were you ever misdiagnosed? Do you believe your pain was caused by dental work? Have you had unsuccessful surgeries or medications?)
UPDATE NOV 6, 2010 I added another drug, klonopin. But it is working very well. I haven't felt this well in over two years, not even after my MVD. I am having trouble with sleepiness but hopefully I can manage that. Now I am hoping it continues. But it does give me second thoughts about surgery. Does one try surgery again if the pain is being controlled despite being on many medications? That is what I'll have to decide and many of you are faced with the same decision. UPDATE 7 FEB 2010: I am doing better after MVD. My pain has continually decreased since surgery in Apr 2009. Most days I don't need my tylenol 3. And I am considering not taking the trileptal. But my migraines are worse when I quit it. And both the neuro and surgeon told me to keep my migraines under control. In fact when my last bad episode of TN, it started with a migraine on Oct 20, 2008. Although I wanted to be free of pain and medication after the MVD, I am very happy with my pain relief.

UPDATE: I had MVD surgery on April 27, 2009. Most of my pain is very controllable. Although I still take medication, I am taking only a third of the trileptal and narcotic that I previously took.
I am still taking 3600 mg of neurontin. But overall the surgery was successful and I would not hesitate to repeat the surgery if needed.I have been fortunate.

BEFORE MVD: I took between 100-200 mg of neurontin was under control most of the time. But in October 2008, that didn't happen. I continually got worse even after raising the neurontin and adding steriods. I am suffering very little pain now but I am taking 2400 mg of neurontin and Tylenol 3. I don't want to continue these medicines and I am seeing a doctor at the pain center this week. I heard about alcohol shots and want his advice. I also intend to go to a one of the medical centers and seek advice about surgeries. I want advice on what type of surgery. There are so many and I am confused. I don't know if I will try surgery now but I want a plan if the pain comes back and I suffer like I did for the past two months. I suffer from the knife like stabbing pain many times a minute and for days on end. I would initially get relief after raising the neurontin and then it comes back after a few days. The only relief is sleeping. I do not have any pain while sleeping. But I am doing well now - very limited breakthrough pain.
Would you like to recommend a doctor, therapist or a hospital?

Update - I'm doing better

I may have finally found a medicine that is working after several that caused me many problems. The doctor added klonopin. I've had the best week I've had in several months. After sleeping almost constantly for the first 5 days, I am up and about and doing fairly well. I had to drop the dose a bit but my pain relief is still good. I still wished I could drop the trileptal, but it is probably too soon to try that. I believe the trileptal is the medicine that is causing my memory issues.

But… Continue

Baclofen

I am pretty sure I've seen a post about baclofen but I don't recall what was said. I know a lot of you take it.

I was given baclofen and it worked really well. My TN pain was so much better but I had a terrible reaction to it. I had very bad shakes/jerks, almost a foot wide (not sure I'm phrasing that correctly). My hands would slam down on my desk or in my lap when I tried to hold my hands up. And I also had electrical sharp pain in my hands down to my finger tips. It was extremely… Continue

MRI s machines differ

Some of you probably already know that MRI machines differ. My doctor wanted me to have an MRI/MRA on a certain machine in our town. He said it was the best. I had an MRI/MRA last night. The technician said that that machine was the best MRI in North Alabama. She said it was a 3T which is twice as strong as the machine (1.5 T) I had my MRI on before surgery. She said the pictures are at least twice as good. So you may ask your doctor to schedule your MRI on the best machine available in your… Continue

Acupuncture

I decided to try acupuncture and had 3 treatments this week. Not only did it not help, I am hurting much worse. I should not have gone in after the 1st day. I would like to hear from others who perhaps initially had an increase in pain, but then the pain got better.

He did take away the soreness along my hairline in the back on the upper neck and the soreness in my groin. I did not complain about either of those but he said those areas were connected. He reached up after pushing in… Continue

Hi Liz -

From what I've been told, I'm not a candidate for surgery due to the fact that I have idiopathic TN (my neuro cannot find the cause of the TN - so where do would be the starting place for surgery??  Nobody knows....).  I am currently working with an acupuncturist and it appears to be working, but I may also have an ear infection right now, so it's screwing me up....is it my TN pain that's causing me discomfort or is it an ear infection.  They are so close together....almost on top of eachother, so it's difficult to distinguish which is which.  I tried calling my primary dr to get an appt to check to see if it's the ear thing and she's out of the office this week.  I have an appt with my neuro on the 14th, so I think I'm just gonna suck it up until I see her and see what she thinks I should do.  I have a feeling it's going to be a loooong week.  :o(

Liz,

From what you have said, I think your pain is much worse than mine.  I'm sorry you are having to endure it.   I hope the doctors are helping you keep it under control.

Take care and be well!

Liz yes my plate is very full with all the kids and my Daugter with MS so far the one down fall she has noticed is her mind is wanting to get moving and do all the things she was used to doing before the Chemo but her body is not on the same wave. I told her that it will take time and we all knew this may happen. If she found that she just to wiped out from it that she has  control of stopping the Chemo.

Thank you for the warm thoughts have a great day.

Hi Liz,

I have an arterial loop thats hitting the nerve that he clearly saw on my MRI. He recommended MVD and said I have a very high chance of not only doing well but it taking care of the pain. I'm in a situation where I won't have enough PTO until summer to take off for the surgery since I was just on maternity leave. I am still unsure about the surgery. He did prescribe me Lyrica that i'm giving a shot again. I really hope it starts to work soon.

He did get me in touch with a patient my age who has 2 little ones like me. We are getting together in the next couple weeks. I have a follow up appt with the doc in April (or sooner if I need a change in meds).

Thanks for the follow up!

Jen

Thanks for that Liz. I've been reading about how to try and manage the pain...easier said than done, especially for those close to you too. I've a couple of really bad days, and as you have had, three or four good ones. It just seems like a waiting game somehow, waiting for the next bout to come along. I have another appointment next week at the docs for a check up so fingers crossed. I'm someone who hates taking prescribed medication, difficult when you have TN. You have to do what you have to do I suppose.

I hope the weather in your vicinity doesn't turn out to be as bad as you anticipate. We have had one of the coldest, snowiest UK winters in a very long time and unfortunately my elderly mother died last November which meant I couldn't be with her at the hospital because we live way out in the country where we were cut-off for three weeks. A friend told me that could have been the trigger to set this off but I'm not sure...have you any thoughts on that?

I hope you have a good week too whatever the weather.

Peter

Liz,

Thanks for your comments.  Unfortunately, I can't wear contact, because I have abnormally dry eyes.  :-(

Aye, the pain Fibromyalgia and TN causes is unbelievable at times.  Nonetheless, I ended the medications because they were making me confused and fatigued.  I also grew tired of being physically addicted to them.  I began the weaning process four months ago.

I wish you the best during your healing journey!

Liz,

Thank you for your kind welcome.  Yes, so far, my pain has been mild compared to what I'm reading about.  However, it has been changing rapidly.  3 weeks ago I had an isolated incident in a single tooth.  Now I have pain in all my teeth on the right side whenever I shower, get breezes on my face (warm or cold), cry or sing (I assume facial movements).  So I am trying my best to stay positive but can be a bit fearful at times.  I already take topamax for migraines and my doc gave me tegretol for this.
