Hi Sara,   I don't believe their could be any correlation between the disc herniation and the MVD. Probably a coincidence. I have had a disc herniation, but with physical therapy was able to recover and did not need any…

Hi Red,   I can not take Neurontin as of the side effects. I was on Tegretol the first time with TN with some success, but I had to increase my dose on a regular basis due to break through pain and the side effects from the Tegretol became…

MVD in Dec. '08' TN Back w/Vengeance!!!

Was completely pain free for 6 months and then minor aches/pains for the rest of the time except recently. Couple of months ago I started having more face pain so I went to the doctor to rule out any other cause. No other causes, just TN. Darnit! 7 days ago... worst pain since before my surgery! I would rather give birth to a 10 lb. baby every day than experience this! Went to doctor yesterday as I've been having pain every day, all day and it is intense! I'm already taking Lyrica 225 mg. twice…See More

What treatments have you undergone (or will undergo)? With what success?
Tried Gabapentin, now taking Carbatrol & Baclofen & will be doing MVD on Dec. 15, 2008.
Please share your TN story with us...(How did your pain first emerge and then change over time? Were you ever misdiagnosed? Do you believe your pain was caused by dental work? Have you had unsuccessful surgeries or medications?)
I had been having some mild tooth pain, (or so I thought) for a few months, but I didn't have the money to go have a cavity filled so I ignored it.

The pain was increasing and one day the pain was so incredible that I would rather birth a child every day than have another attack.

I began seeing dentists who would refer me to another type of dentist. Finally, they all decided I needed to have a tooth removed. Thankfully, the endodontist said, frankly, I can't imagine that this is going to fix anything as it seems like your pain is moving.

I decided to go see a doctor and it was the doc who said I think you have trigeminal neuralgia and she referred me to a neurologist. The neurologist confirmed the diagnosis of TN, and so my journey began.

I was put on gabapentin, which did not control the pain very well, however I became very agitated and somewhat homicidal. This is not good so I was changed to Carbatrol. Shortly thereafter I went into a remission for a couple of months so I was medication free for that short period of time. I tried to rough out the attacks when they came again, but I turned to the doctors and their medications rapidly as the pain was horriffic!

I do not function well on the med's and have seen a neurosurgeon who says I'm a good candidate for the MVD which is scheduled for December 15, 2008.

I'm both excited and anxious at the same time. I'm looking forward to being pain free, (as it has a 95% success rate), however, I am anxious, very anxious about having a hole drilled in my head!
Would you like to recommend a doctor, therapist or a hospital?
Dr. Leveque at Group Health in Seattle.

Hi Kim, I know we were suppose to do coffee tomorrow. And my brain is mush and I realized that tomorrow is the 2 yr anniversary of Lisa's death, David has to go to Dr. Moss for orthodontics etc.. So I'm going to have to do it another time.

FYI:
We did the trip from Vancouver Wa back home last night and the roads were fine. They were wet and there was snow at times but we saw lots snow plow trucks putting down de-icer. Lots of sanding trucks too.
The 2 left lanes from Ft. Lewis down to SeaTac area are very rutted and bumpy. If that bothers your face stay over if you can.
I will keep you in my prayers and thougths tonight, hope you get a decent night's sleep and tomorrow for safe travels, tomorrow for a simple and thorough surgery....simple, I mean easy to fix. For the next week for a peaceful recovery. I will be looking for updates.
Gentle hug for you.
Stephanie

Welcome Kimberley. I can only imagine your anxiety...but to be pain free with no meds.I've had TN for a long time and have been able to tolerate Tegretol and now Depakote too but I don't want to be on them forever and I do have breakthrough episodes once or twice a year that are quite debilitating so I am beginning to think seriously about the surgery. Please keep us posted and don't hesitate to share your fears. this is a wonderful and compassionate group that you have joined. Judy
