I know there are many types of TMJ but was wondering what helps you with yours apart from trying not to stress too much about it?:) A TMJ specialist I saw will have me wearing splints for the night…Continue

So far all I know about TMJ treatments is there are night splints, braces or surgery. I've asked around for different pricing and I'm getting that braces and night splints will be between…Continue

Comment by typqueen on April 1, 2012 at 9:04pm I have read many times that TMJ can aggravate the trigeminal nerve. It never said caused it, but obviously, it's all in the same place so it would make sense if the TMJ is inflamed, the nerve is not gonna be happy. From what my doc told me, it's not uncommon for someone to have both, but that doesn't mean you don't have TN. Yeah, unless the pharmacist is a personal friend of yours, or is talking from some personal experience, it's not his or her place to give her medical advice. That's way out of line. Jerry - sorry to hear about your pain coming back. That stinks. Thinking good thoughts for you!

Comment by Porcelina on April 1, 2012 at 8:46pm I went to refill my gabapentin prescription, telling my pharmacist that Tegretol put me in hospital so hopefully this works and the only other option is Lyrica (which is not funded here, have to pay full price) ... and he was saying do you have TMJ which I do. He then swore black and blue that TMJ causes TN and that it very well may be the cause of my problems (also asking if I had had dental work - last teeth that were pulled were my wisdom teeth about 16 years ago!) ... and that I should try TMJ exercises and it'd take away the TN. I tried not to shake my head, maybe TMJ is a precipitating factor but surely all the pain further up wouldn't be caused by TMJ? Who knows. Sounds like he shouldn't be giving that sort of advice tho!
Comment by jerry on February 13, 2012 at 1:56pm ODSP isn't anything you have to worry about living in the U.S. ODSP is Ontario disability support program. Tegridol didn't do anything for me either and I had many doctors tell me its the only thing for TN for 8 months I kept sayin it isn't working so they just upped my dose for almost a year until one doctor finally suggested Neurontin. Ask about Neurontin-gabapentin, granted i take 7 300mgs of that a day, but it did really help the twitching attacks.
Personally I did nerve blocks and they made my TN pain worse but everyone is different. Not everyone with TN needs surgery. I have a splint that I wear everyday and night. It helps sooo f-ing much u have no idea. lol
When I started seeing a pain specialist we did nerve blocks for 2 months even though I told him it made it worse everytime. He kept saying the only thing for my type of TN would be opiates. I didn't want to be another person addicted to oxy's. Finally I broke down and we started opiates. I forget what the first one was, it helped for a week then lost effect, next was morphine, again it helped for a week and stopped working and then made me insanely itchy so now I know to never let a dr give me morphine.
Then they started me on Dilaudid. OMG!!! The relief I got was immense after 20 some years of daily pain. Granted I still have a certain amount of daily pain but its allot less. I've been begging for something for days of break through pain but they say if its bad enough go to emerg. Everytime I've gone to emerg for pain, they look at me like a pill seeker because I'm only 26 and have facial piercings. So I go home mad, still in pain and depressed that they wouldn't help me. Anyways, I hope that was helpful Jerry.
Comment by jerry on February 11, 2012 at 8:39am I was denied 2 times before I got on ODSP. Being on ODSP makes things so much easier, ur not worried about if your face with hurt for a month and u can't work. Its a long difficult process but well worth it. The more doctors you can get on ur side the better. And if you take a calender and write on each day how much pain you had and for how long, that helps. My dad is embarassed that I'm on disability and he thinks I'm a hypocondriac, thanks dad I love you too. If 2 different neurologists think I have TN than I must have it. My family doctor helped me fight to get on ODSP and seeing a pain management specialist helps too. Since getting on ODSP I got my own apartment and am raising a puppy to become a service dog. So atleast I'm doing something good with my time. There is a group about the ODSP fight but they didn't have it while I was going through my fight.
That's awful. I don't technically have TMJ. When I had braces they put these "posts" on two of my teeth to stop me from biting off my lower brackets. And having those 'posts' on for 2 yrs really over worked some muscles and ligaments. And after I got my braces off my bottom jaw would slip out while i'm talking and my front top and bottom teeth would smash into each and it hurt like bugger. And for 10 yrs I've told ppl something wasn't right but it wasn't until recently i got it looked at because I couldn't afford a splint until now. Not that I have my splint my jaw hardly ever hurts. I love it. My TMJ is bilateral and so is my TN. It took me along time to get diagnosed with TN because its on both sides and because I'm only 26. But I was persistant and got diagnosed and on ODSP.
Yes there are people that got TN after an oral surgeon was removing wisdom teeth and nicked the nerve. And my TMJ was cause by an orthodontist that didn't listen when I told him many times my jaw hurt. My dentist that is treating my TMJ says the way that my orthodontist straightened my teeth caused my TMJ. As you can imagine I was pissed. Do you think thats what happened to you, Jackie F?
