Hi Jackie,
Yes, I had one MVD, that after 3mo. was so bad again that I went on mega med's. Did this for several months. One night while sleeping it came on so bad I couldn't even open my mouth a tiny bit. Had emergency surgery, but was a Balloon. So far so good, but I do feel it trying to come again. They do say it will only last 3yrs., but Surgeon said we'll just do the balloon again. My new Surgeon says he would do a MVD. I had major problems with the first MVD is the only reason I had a Balloon instead. I have Bilateral, so have had a MVD on the other side. I feel so sorry for your friend. Many prayers and thoughts will be with her. Hope she gets relief soon!!!!

Permalink Reply by DonnaTn15 on January 25, 2012 at 11:54am I had another mvd about a year after my first one. I was completely pain-free for about 4 yrs. Then it came back. I spoke to my neuro-surgeon who told me that I could have a third one and that I would have about a 50/50 percent chance of it returning. Right Now I am trying to manage the pain with meds. I know that some day I may try another mvd. I don't want the nerve manipulated too much by the other procedures. I have read that mvd surgery is less manipulative than the other procedures and has the greater outcome. But then I have also read that it has caused more nerve damage as well and newer problems from pain had come about in some patients. If her surgeon wasn't able to find the offending vessel the first time he probable wouldn't that so soon the second time, maybe a check with a more experienced surgeon with a fresh pair of eyes may be needed.

Permalink Reply by doowni on January 25, 2012 at 7:58pm I had two MVD Surgeries within 14 months...the first worked about 50%, the second was mostly a success, I am off all Anti Seizure meds. I was on them for almost 13 years, my quality of life is amazingly better!.....I still have slight pain but not debilitating pain. I would do these surgeries again in a heartbeat!
