The pain doesn't stop and the doctors don't help. All we are given are meds and sent home! Why?! Then, we have the other side of the coin, the doctor

Communication Tips with your Doctor

According to the American Academy of Neurology,
approximately half of the U.S. population cannot
understand and use the information provided by
their clinicians. Whether a language barrier or other
communication problem, this group may be at risk
for:
• Misunderstanding healthcare instructions,
prescriptions, and appointment slips
• Poor health outcomes
• Increased healthcare costs
• Medical errors
Behaviors and responses from patients that further
create problems are:
• Patient registration forms/history that are
incomplete or inaccurate
• Frequently missed appointments
• Noncompliance with medication regimens
• Lack of follow-through with laboratory
tests, imaging tests, or referral or consultants
• Patients say they are taking their
medications, but lab tests or physiological
parameters do not change in the expected
fashion.
• Patient unable to name medication, explain
its purpose or timing of administration.
At the end of each office visit, a patient should be
able to answer the following questions:
• Where do I go for tests, medicine, and
appointments?
• How should I take my medicine?
• When do I take it?
• What will it do?
• How do I know it is working?
• Whom do I call if I have questions?
Other instructions may include:
• What to do. How to do it. When to do it.
• When do I need to be seen again?
• Do I have another appointment? If so, what
is the date and time of the appointment?
• Are there phone numbers to call?
This sounds basic, but as a SG Leader you would be
surprised what people do and do not know. Help
your doctor help you.

It's amazing how many questions we don't think to ask and how doctors leave it to us to make sense of it. only problem is, many can't.

I have a combo of conditions. What I'm hoping to do is figure out what exactly are the TN probs vs other probs that magnify TN.

anyone out there who can tell me if TN in itself is just the pain? I don't mean to minimize the pain. I know how it is, I have TN. But I'm trying to separate TN from other conditions..

do tell ..... what do you know about TN?

Coping and support
By Mayo Clinic staff

Living with trigeminal neuralgia can be difficult. The disorder may affect your interaction with friends and family, your productivity at work, and the overall quality of your life.

You may find encouragement and understanding in a support group. Group members often know about the latest treatments and tend to share their own experiences. If you're interested, your doctor may be able to recommend a group in your area.

i understand that one Diana,. it is frustrating. I am lucky to have my daughter with me the last time i was with him. apparently nothing i was saying was making sense so he spoke with her. i got a tickle how she spoke in "medical terms" ~ and said so. She looked and me and said, that's what i went to college for. ha!~

Good luck with the insurance! I'm still battling that myself.

You are very lucky Suzanne.
I am still waiting for my new insurance to go through.

Thanks Ro, hubby woke up ok took his new meds and is now sleeping on the couch and feels foggy. I wish I could call for him. The only time is when I go to an appointment with him, LOL the doc ask him, he talks then the doc asks for my input. I don't get it, if I am there, ok, if not can't do anything about it. Frustrating!

hi diana,
that's a great idea actually and it took me a while to think of it too.. to call the doc when there are problems. this way they have a history. What i did is made a 'connection' of sorts with on of the receptionists and if it was something i needed him to call me about, she'd do that. if not and i just wanted them to know that something is going on and i'm iffy ~ i'd tell her to have him call only if there was something more that can be done. If it was rather bad, i go to ER. Each call i'd make, i'd ask they put it on record because i will forget to tell him if the time comes.

I believe that communication is so important. When i worked, i used to even fax info to the doc.

What I did was give my daughter limited power of attorney so in the event I can't make decisions, she would have the authority to speak to the docs etc. the docs also have a copy.

I wish you all the best.. it's great to have a doc u can talk to isn't it Suzanne?
