Heather, it is common for trigeminal pain symptoms and trigger zones to shift, even fairly rapidly.  Likewise, the treatment options for Occipital, Geniculate, and Trigeminal Neuralgia are pretty much the same.  If you haven't already read our Face Pain Info articles, then I suggest you check them out from the menu tab by that name. The pain journal is a good idea from several standpoints, if you can get your doctor to read it.  Some of them must be nudged rather hard with a pickaxe handle before they will condescend to listen to the patient's reports.

Regards and best,

Red

Red, I DO have pain at the base of my skull on the left side. It also radiates out toward my ear and jaw, also there is scalp sensitivity. Brushing my hair on that side hurts, also wind or a/c blowing on it causes pain. Mentioned it to neuro, she just nodded her head and said nothing. It's a tad frustrating trying to pin down my symptoms because they are all over the place! I am keeping a pain journal so I can just bring it to appointments and so I can look for any patterns or anything.

Pain "behind" the eye is frequent with both types of TN.  Occipital neuralgia is more often experienced in the rear quadrant of the skull as far down as the base of the neck.   Sinus infection is less often associated with pain in the eye, and more often with forehead and cheek pain.  Before you have sinus surgery, be sure the team is aware that you may have TN.  It could change the approach they use to anesthesia.

No, you are not a hypocondriac -- I have HORRIBLE eye pain.  Take Lyrica for  PHTN.  Think part of it is also dry eye.  Want to see a neuro-opthamologist.  DO NOT want anyone putting any bright lights in my eyes, that killed me (see my page).  Get some blind person sunglasses.  The best you can find.  They really help.  Stay away from any flourescent lights, movies, and TV.  I can't even drive.  This sucks and I emphathize!!!

Hi everybody! My ATN didn't start with eye pain, but I believe it has evolved! Oh goody! The past few months I have had sensitivity to light, sun, light from computer, etc. It's gotten steadily worse. Pain when I move my eyes, also. Sometimes it feels like there's a sword stuck through my head and through the back of my eyes. Awful! I don't know if this is occipital whatever or if it's just another fun way for the ATN to express itself! Maybe it's from the sinuses being such a disaster? Having surgery on may 22 for that. Any input appreciated. I feel like I must sound like a hypocondriac....but the symptoms change and I never really know what to expect from this.

Hello everyone! I am still not sure about my dg, because still haven`t been documented. My story started about year ago when i  had pain in upper medial corner of my right eye. After some months i started to have headache that was localized behind the eye. Also for all this time i have intermittent mild ptosis and sometimes i feel dizziness. I have made MRI and CT scan of the head and brachiocephal blood vessels, Only MRI showed that i had pansinusitis...i took AB. But still i have these complaints. The Dr is still looking for my Dg.....Maybe someone could share with some info or experience?

Update:

Last week I had the detached retina in my right eye.  This week my left eye had symptoms (shooting lights) and I had to have another surgery.

The retinal specialist who did the surgery said there was no connection to the TN, but I wonder?

I had eye surgery last week for a detached retena. It's not TN related, but I wanted to spread the word to all of you to be aware that seeing shooting lights is serious and not sometimhing to be brushed off and ignored!!!

I almost blew it off because it was the least of my problems, but when I told my doctor she sent me straight to the emergency room and I had surgery within hours. Our sight is nothing to be trifled with.

I just saw Dr. Goldstein from Tufts in Boston.  They're developing a new eye drop to help with eye pain.  Patient trials start in July/August this year.  He tells me this is the 1st targeted therapy for eye pain (non-steroid).  Possibly some hope on the horizon.  It's at least good to know doctors are starting to realize this is a major problem for some of us.

Thank you for your response Red. Guess I'll just chalk it up to coincidence (being the same side as my other symptoms) and head back to my reg dr!
