Trigeminal Neuralgia (TN) - Online Support Group

We are patients living with Trigeminal Neuralgia, here for your support.

Is there anyone else who had dental work (in my case, a root canal) and had TN result from the dental work? At least, I know that I never had any pain or any complications of any kind until just after having a root canal.

Flipper, The pain that i experienced with the root canal that i originally went to the dentist for was nothing compared to the pain that i live with now that i have trigeminal neuralgia. I really cant help but feel that the dentist is at fault here. I didnt have TN when i went in but i did when i came out.

I orginally blamed the dentist but i did go there and get the root canal due to pain. So was the probpem already there? I try not to blame the dentist. I am really annoyed though that they all dismissed trigeminal neuralgia as being the problem.

same here Jennifer . If I wasn't medicated (neurontin) I could not function other than to moan in pain.

I know where you are coming from and half of me agrees but because I can not prove it,I try to allow for things that I don't know about

I had 3 root canals ( same tooth) and apicectomy(sp?) a crown,a deep root clean (grrrrr- never get one) and then the tooth fell out (howl). It is one of my front ones so I couldn't live without it.

I need to go to the dentist but I am trying to find one who understands about TN.The whole thought terrifies me cause I have so much resentment towards them

:(

i need to have  my wisdom teeth on the top removed right now and im so afriad of what will happen, im scared that they will some how damage me further. I desperately need to go. I have put it off so long that they are now broken and they will have to be cut out in pieces instead of pulled. Im certian they are adding to the amount of pain im in but im so afraid. The last time i went to the dentist i left with TN.

Flipper going to the dentist also terrifies me. Im in desperate need of one right now and am to frightened to go. My wisdom teeth are in horrible shape, but i am afriad to make my condition worse. Im to afraid to trust another dentist, but i also dont want to die from infection in my wisdom teeth. Not sure what to do.....

Thanks for the encouraging words but if you knew me you would know that im almost always the exception to the rule, so if lightening doesnt strike me twice, it will strike me three times! I sometimes have horrible luck! Also i would like to thank you for the advice about using an oral surgeon instead of my general dentist, which i will probably never return to in any case,  she was the one who preformed the root canal and now the TN causes great pain in the whole right side of my face from my ear where it feels like someone is stabbing inside it with a screwdriver all the way to the front of my mouth where it feels like someone with a lightening fist is punching me in the teeth all the way up to my eye where there is a spot next to my eyebrow that knocks my to my knees even if its lightly graze with a make up brush. It has been a challenge to learn to live this way it has definately taken over my life...... I know that im at great risk for my infection from my wisdom teeth  spreading thru my body an possibly making me very ill so i must doing something about removing them I will schedule an appointment with an oral surgeon as soon as possible, thanks again for the advice and just listening that really helps alot to have someone to talk to about these things.....

Hi Jennifer.

My wisdom teeth were impacted and infected when I had them taken out.  I went to an oral surgeon (definitely recommend that you do too). He put me on antibiotics before the surgery, which addressed the infection. But you are right - they need to come out before they do more damage to you.  Tough place to be - risks either way.  If it makes you feel any better, I would rather have my wisdom teeth out than have a filling or root canal performed by a dentest. I think more damage is caused by a dentist than an oral surgeon or endodontist.  I too believe my pain started as a result of a "misplaced" injection by the dentist...the needle went straight into my nerve, and that started my pain issues (and subsequent fear of the dentist office).

Good luck with the windom teeth.

Leslie, Thanks so much for your advice and understanding. I remembered while reading about what happened to you with the misplaced injection that while she was about to preform my root canal that she numbed me first with an injection then began working. I let her know real quick that i wasnt numb and could feel everything she was doing so she gave me another injection and that one didnt work either, she proceeded to give me 5 more injections before she finally gave me one that was excruciating it hurt so bad almost come out of the chair, but in a few minutes i was numb finally. I was thinking maybe thats when my damage occured also.

In diagnosing your TN, has a Doctor ever told you outright that the wisdom tooth extraction was to blame? I have never been able to get anyone - neurosurgeon, maxillo facial surgeon - anyone to admit that the wisdom extraction CAUSED my TN. I so wish that someone in the medical profession would have the guts to say to me "Yes it looks like a fellow doctor screwed up your face"
I went to a new dentist and I knew that I was in need of having some fillings replaced. He was the first dentist I ever went to that used the metal blocks to maintain my mouth open while doing the fillings. After that I started to notice some discomfort on my right side around the sinus area. Within a month after my dental  procedure I was in excruciating pain. I remember seeing my doctor, tears in my eyes and telling him the pain was so bad that I just wanted to rip my face off. He immediately called a neurologist and prescribed me tegretol within the first hour of my first dose I felt relieved. I think those metal blocks was what did it.

Robyn, I had a crown in Jan 2010 and 2 weeks later had the achng ,throbbing & shocking pain 1st week in Jan 2010. The dental triggered my TN,but I found out my grandfather had it so mine is genetic. I started using Neurontin which worked for 10-11months, changed to Lyrica and I am now using Trileptal. Get a good general practioner and neurologist. We are here for you.

Jim

I recently joined the support group and I am in Scotland, my problems started in hindsight many years ago and I have had at least 20 unnecessary dental surgeries, like you Robyn I am very suspicious that mine began following a root canal but also believe anxiety to at least be a part of the reason as to why I have atypical trigeminal neuralgia.  Having said that I have a very vivid memory of 2 occasions where i had local anaesthesia which caused a very strong electric shock zapping sensation right down the nerve into my chin and was very shocking and unlike anything I ever experienced before, i also wonder if this was the starting point for me as it is all since then that the pain has got very bad on a daily basis, I have been at the point of desperation for a long time and demanded at least 7 of my teeth to be taken out completely convinced it was a tooth abcess and of course the pain just went on to another tooth but even today I could almost be sure there is a tooth abcess under my upper right rear molar but of course there isnt!!! my pain goes from my top rear teeth into my cheekbone and ear, it started on the left lower jaw and has moved to the right upper jaw and in between has various other places it settles but mainly and daily in the upper right, I have tried Zoloft (sertraline) with little effect and now taking 10mg amitryptiline which I think has knocked the edge off the pain, even on that low dose, having said that I visited the chiropractor 3 days before starting amitryptiline so that was a little silly as I am now unsure which of the 2 things has given relief, just for your notes, the chiropractor said my C1 and C2 were jammed up and he loosened the tension there and also the muscle at the back of my neck running down my inside shoulder blade was very tensed up and in complete spasm, when I experience the facial pain, some days i feel there is a direct correlation between there and my  neck muscles or perhaps it is just pain radiating there, anyone else experience this? thinking of you all, it is so very difficult to cope with this.

Mairi, you are absolutely right about the relationship between head, neck, shoulder muscles and jaw pain. Sometimes mine extends down my arm and if I press my arm I feel the pain in my jaw. The whole system is connected via nerves, muscles and fascia [ connective tissue]. I've just sent off for a book on myofascial therapy as I feel the need to break the cycle.

I can de-trigger the spasms myself but they pop up elsewhere and the spasms pull my jaw out of  line. I agree about tension & I'm constantly being advised to relax, but those who say that have never had TN. I was on 40mg of amyitriptyline for a while and that did help with the tension but I'm trying to cope without drugs now.

Hi Pat, Im glad you are trying to cope without meds, it is a worry to be on tablets as I suppose it is never the ideal thing, for me I am ever so glad I am getting a little relief on such a small 10mg dose of amitryptiline, this is the first time anything has ever touched the pain although part of me is afraid the relief has come from seeing the chiropractor, time will tell im sure. It is such a complex disorder and I like you feel it is very easy for Dr's or people in general to be quite dismissive about the pain we experience but I can honestly say after the natural and sometimes difficult labours and births of my 5 children I would rather go through all of that again than have this daily pain, it is as close to the pain of childbirth I have ever experienced except there is nothing to look forward to like in childbirth!!! anyway, Im just so glad and feel very blessed to have some relief, just hope it lasts, best wishes,xx
