Trigeminal Neuralgia (TN) - Online Support Group

We are patients living with Trigeminal Neuralgia, here for your support.

Is there anyone else who had dental work (in my case, a root canal) and had TN result from the dental work? At least, I know that I never had any pain or any complications of any kind until just after having a root canal.

My life turned upside down after a bad root canal, never ending pain.  Swollen glands and degrading health. I finally had the teeth taken out. And got talked into having an old impacted wisdom tooth taken out at the time. eveything went bad.

Trying to correct a minor pain issue has resulted in 3 more surgeries and now continual pain.

Be careful what path you take to try and fix this. Don't let anyone talk you into anything without doing lots of research and then proceed cautiously.

The pain could be from nerves or the root canal tooth could have a crack that is not evident on xrays.

This is exactly how mine started 4/2009 with a root canal, after root canal pain in jaw then two more root canals on same tooth and finally tooth extracted and pain never stopped two years and 2 months later still in horrible pain going to a neurosurgeon 4 hours away June 27th otherwise I have not had anything pain meds etc that have given me any relief, they call mine Trigeminal Neuropathy

I have burning tongue and so etimes lips...stemming from dental work mishaps...crown still hurts after all that. Just started using a night guard that I got fitted for. We shall see how that works. It's always something! Like there isn't enough to handle already.....
My pain started immediately after gum surgery. That was over two years ago. I have seen numerous drs and was diagnosed after visiting a specialist in Calif. who said I have trigeminal lingual neuropathy (post surgical).  During surgery I received numerous injections.  My pain is deep inside the gums, front and back of by bottom eight front teeth. The pain is constant and feels like a mix of needles, throbbing, and pressure. I have so far avoided drugs stronger than advil. I have never been able to tolerate pain killers well. Advil does little to help. I started accupuncture last week. So far, no improvement for me.  My next step is to see a neurologist.  I was hoping for nerve repair surgery but was told by a oral surgeon that it would not work for me.  I have always been an upbeat person my whole life, even when faced with the death of parents, divorce, and a previously diagnosed autoimmune disorder. But  I am wearing so thin from this. The pain just wears me down. I have slept very little in two  years. I think I am ready to try meds and hope they might just give me some relief.  I have felt so alone for so long with this. It  has given me some comfort to know that I am not alone. Thank goodness for this support site.  My heart goes out to all of you who are suffering from this awful pain.

iT WOULD BE NICE TO HEAR FROM PEOPLE WHOM HAVE FOUND RELIEF,

I HAVE FOUND SOME RELIEF GETTING MASSAGE ACCUPRESSURE AND CRANAL WORK,

BUT NOTHING LASTING SO FAR. tHE MORE i THINK ABOUT IT i HAD SOME ISSUES BEFORE THE DENTAL WORK

But the dental worked activated the pain and nothing seems to be able to turn it off.

How many old injuries that I my have dismissed or forgotten about could have contributed to this problem of pain in my face.  The on going pain in my tooth and jaw though all started with the bad dental work.

My doctoer feels that there is likely more than one thing going on..........all contirbuting to the problem.

Finding solutions is hard when we are only guessing at all the probable causes.

I have found the postings and information from other people very helpful.

Keep on sharing everybody. Especially if you have found relief.

Thanks!!!

I suffered for many years with TN.  I have also had relief for several years from it with no meds or surgery.  I also have MS diagnosed 13 years ago and have absolutely no symptoms and no meds or treatment.  This was all confirmed by MRI.  I started out listening to a tape by a man who was confined to a wheel chair from MS, and started on Shaklee vitamins and thru only the use of vitamins (especially lots of Vit. B, the stress vitamin) not those bought in drugstores which are mostly fillers.  Then after awhile, I discovered a NUCCA chiropractor (I had tried others with no relief) and boy what a difference he made in my life.  It took about 2 mos and several treatments but I realized that my head did not sit straight on the axis (top of spine) and as soon as he got this to hold, I went months with no pain.  I got to point of treatment once every 2-3 mos and then went several years without.  A couples years ago, pain started coming back.  I went back to him and I am now back to trying every 3 mos.  Pain free now for several mos.  I definately need the Vit B and Multi because I know that stress sucks up our vit. B and that is when the tinge starts.  At that point, I up my Vit B and get a treatment.  Now this may not work for everyone but it gave me back mine.  Not sure where you at but just type in NUCCA Chiropractic and check out your area.

I am working with someone who does cranal work and accupressure,

I feel the pain changing..I also take daily vit b12 and mega vitamins. i feel great except for the face and tooth pain.

Hydrocodone helps with the mental pain. I am trying a new gabapentin cream.   I will see if I can find a chiropractor that understtands nerve pain. Thank you for your response!!!!!!!!!!
